Taking a panoramic view of sub-Saharan Africa with a particular focus on the Nigerian Six-Year Primary Project, this paper provides compelling reasons for why the first language should be used as a medium of instruction, taught as a subject, and drawn upon as a resource for cultural learning beyond junior primary schooling.
